Measles Cases Rising Across North America

Measles is an extremely infectious illness caused by the measles virus.  Symptoms can appear anywhere from 7 to 21 days after exposure to the virus, although cases typically develop symptoms 7-14 days after exposure. Common symptoms include fever, cough, conjunctivitis, and a rash that often spreads over the whole body and can last for several days. Infection with measles can result in dangerous complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) – infants and young children are particularly susceptible to complications from measles.

In 2025, measles cases and outbreaks have been identified across North America. As of April 15th, over 550 cases (two resulting in death) have been reported as part of an outbreak in Texas; over 800 cases of measles have been identified in Ontario, Canada, since October of 2024. Measles cases have been reported in several Michigan counties so far this year. For the latest measles updates and information, please refer to the MDHHS Measles Updates page: https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/adult-child-serv/childrenfamilies/immunizations/measlesupdates.

Vaccination is an Effective Way to Prevent the Spread of Measles
Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. The CDC reports that just one dose of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine is 93% effective against measles, and two doses are 97% effective. If you have not received the MMR vaccine or are unsure of your vaccination status, please contact your primary care provider or the Genesee County Health Department’s Immunizations Division. Program Highlights

Tobacco Use Licensing and Reduction Program

To help reduce youth smoking and access to tobacco, the Health Department licenses local tobacco retailers and conducts tobacco compliance checks. In 1994, Genesee County became one of three counties in Michigan that required retailers to obtain an annual tobacco license if they sold tobacco products. County compliance checks are conducted annually to help prevent tobacco sales to minors; annual SYNAR tobacco compliance checks are also conducted as required by the State of Michigan.

Any establishment selling tobacco products in Genesee County must have a license for the retail sale of tobacco.
